the story follows amanda davis, whose perfect life is destroyed when her charismatic and well-known husband paul kills someone in a car accident. she becomes trapped in helping him hide the truth and soon discovers that he's manipulative and increasingly dangerous. as she fights for her freedom as a prisoner in her own mind, she has to decide how far she will go to escape the life she once trusted.
usually, when i'm given thrillers, i can wipe them out in at maximum four days (two or maybe even the same day if it's addictive), but this book put me in a thriller slump that i was not expecting. the first five chapters entertained me for a while, but then everything after that and especially in the middle were very boring. i skimmed a lot between that part and i only really stuck around in the end. the last two chapters weren't as good as i thought they would be, which was disappointing because the ending of a story really solidifies a reader's thoughts.
moving on to the characters. paul was such a horrible person (and i know that is what he was supposed to be written as one, but this is a bit too far). the way he looks at women is quite disturbing given that he has a wife, and toward the middle i was already hating him with a passion.
amanda wasn't any good either. she had zero depth and i have no idea why she didn't leave paul. also all the other stuff that made her guilty that she could've easily avoided made no sense to me.
out of all the skimming i did, the only character i liked was tristan. yes, tristan the child.
